My surgeon wants to put the right knee off as long as possible but said it will most likely be within the next 4 or 5 years. The left one has osteoarthritis too but it's not as bad as the right one. I have a friend that I've shot USPSA with for a couple of decades who had bilateral knee replacement. He told me "Whatever you do, DON"T do both of them at the same time!"

Nobody will give you better advice than your Docs, and I know you and the wife well enough to know you'll do the PT and make a full recovery.

Just don't delay longer than you have to, because once you're back at full capacity you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

Do it brother! Do it NOW! This schit sucks, and mine is apparently a milder case. I thought about getting the shingles vaccine and the pneumonia vaccine about a month ago and didn't do it. I am sorry I put it off.

Did it today. Had a Doc visit scheduled anyway so he could kick the tires now that I turned 74. Looks like I have some time left. Got a lot of ammo I need to shoot up.

Are you only on the antivirals?  If so, ask if gabapentin is an option for you.  Susan had a very mild case of the shingles a few years ago.  I saw it early and she got on meds the next day.  She was given antivirals and gabapentin and it went away quickly with little after effects.  Gabapentin is a nerve medication and can have some bad side effects, so ask if it is right for you.  Steroids are also a possible treatment for the inflammation.  But, again, they're not for everyone.

Damn Doc, you're really up on this! He gave me a nerve medication but I didn't know what it was. Just went and looked and yup, It's gabapentin! The antiviral is valacyclovir. Mayra said it hasn't spread anymore and the lighter spots on my back and chest are fading away.

Yeah, this crap has severely limited what I can do, and my times are so slow on stages at the local matches that require any kind of movement it's pathetic. If he can't get me back close to normal with the cleanup surgery and lubrication shots then I'm going to push for a joint replacement. Right now, I can't do anything that I have to get down on my knees for. You never realize just how much you do a certain thing while going through a normal day until you can't do it!

lubrication shots

Hemi, those Cortisone shots ain't cheap!  I had one this past January thinking that because the injury was work related that the shot would be covered.  Surprise!  Damn Fed Ex denied the claim and I was stuck getting a shot that cost me over 1K.  The worst was I couldn't tell if it did anything for me or not.  YMMV

I sailed through 4 Covid vaccinations without a side effect. This shingles one put me down and out for a day. Injection site pain, a headache and general lethargy. Coming out of it now. I hear you on the loss of mobility. I had to have the ball joint of my right foot fused together 6 years ago so I can no longer run. It sucks.

I sailed through my Covid vacs too. Just to make you feel a little better, I've had a fukkin headache for two weeks now, it's one of the symptoms of shingles. It has seemed to ease off over the last few days though.

Cortisone is a different shot, that's a steroid shot. After my first one it didn't do a damn thing for me. The lubrication shots are something altogether different, and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. My insurance (a Medicare Advantage plan) covers the shots, I just have to pay a $35 copay for seeing a specialist. My knee surgery was only $175!

I hope I make it to Medicare before I have to get the knee operated on.

You know how you can tell this is an old group? We went from after action report to knee replacements and medical insurance. Not saying stop, or even expecting a thread to stay on topic. Just a funny observation.  About the only thing we’re missing is a talk about fiber and keeping regular.

Not possible.  You'll have side effects.  Later.  You just don't see any of them yet.

But, you will...

Wishful thinking to support your skepticism. I will be fine. And a lot better then the roughly 1/3 of people over 60 who have had Covid that suffer long term effects, including my neighbor who has since come down with arrythmias.
