Normally, I'd agree with you. But Trona was a machinist (gearhead) who did some sweet machining. He made his own open primary setup for a belt drive that locked the crankshaft gear and the transmission gear into a rigid plane. Kept those shafts from flexing and trying to meet in the middle. Not his description, my own interpretation. It was rigid, and when you're dealing with 100+ cubic inches of Harley, that's significant.

BTW, this was back in the late 80s, so I'm not talking about what's hot now.
