Ima2AVoter
Well, it said to drop in and introduce myself. Name is Robert and live in Montana. I've been in to black rifles for awhile now and decided to go big finally. I was looking for a place to learn about this black beauty we call an AR10/.DPMS.308 style EBR. I'm looking to build mine from a LE lower I have and gonna make it purty, deadly and accurate. Hunting has caused a need for a type of rifle that can reach out and touch my prey and I just didn't want to go stock. So....drop me a line to say "hey" and offer up advice, I'm a big boy open to learning. I'm also looking to make local friends to hunt and shoot with. Have a safe one. Hoff
Welcome from WI ! I hope you enjoy your build. I can tell you from first hand experience that the .308 AR is an awesome and deadly hunting weapon. I got my RRA LAR8 Predator HP 3 days before deer season last year, and took a huge whitetail buck with it opening day. Terminal performance was great, a clean ethical kill. If you do not handload, I used FGMM 168grain Sierra Matchking BTHP with a 3/4" group at a hundo from a factory rifle. Great hunting ammo, accurate and not expensive. Good luck!! mrmackc
You came to the right place, I am an old shooter, M1, M14, Mini 14, .243, 3006 bolt action, but a "Newbe" at AR.308, I never cottoned to the Ar 15 peashooter and stuck with the Mini 14 .223 as my peashooter righr after my 10-22 Ruger. but the LR308 DPMS landed on my doorstep and has stuck, it is good as a factory in the box piece with a 4.5 X 19 scope and a new drop in 3# trigger and a couple of mods, nothing special made it a sweet reach out and touch something tool. I am from Central Texas, and welcome you! but I can't spell schidt!, or so I've been toldt.. Edited July 31, 2016 by mrmackc
Ima2AVoter
Thanks for the welcome guys, appreciate it. One of the stupidest questions you have probably heard, but I need to ask. Is there a complete list of parts need for a build? I'm not sure where to look and quite honestly, opinions differ. I've got my lower, an LPK and desire to begin....that's all. My purpose for this, is to be a long range PSR that'll be used for hunting coyotes, elk, bear and antelope. I love the platform, that's why I'm building. My thoughts are for a 20" SS 1:10 barrel and a FF barrel shroud with low profile gasblock. I don't like Troy, so I'll not use their stuff. Where do I begin? The lower is DMPS style, but I'm not sure if it's a high profile or low. I prefer to have forward assist button and I am left-handed. I guess that would mean I'll be thinking of using a Raniers ambi charger.Any suggestions are always welcomed.
washguy
IMA these 308's get heavy real quick...you sure you want a 20" barrel...can I talk you out of it? go to Apex machining they have a great lightweight handguard and also a diagram to measure your upper height...Ive got an Apex and its sweet! Or is it a cascade effect because now everything is longer and adds? you got it....barrel weight is a big deal...seems the longer they are the bigger the diameter in some cases....my 16"s shoot out to 500 great and the 18" does too but I hardly use it...the 16"s do everything you could want, but an 18" might be good for you...lets keep the weight down Wash
EngrBob
It is more than the weight of the barrel, the additional length means that the moment arm is longer, increasing the effect of the weight of the brake or flash hider on the end. My 18" Faxon barrel is actually lighter than my 16" Anderson barrel; however, the extra length makes the longer barrel feel a bit heavier even though they both have identical brakes. Overall, the 16" is a couple of ounces heavier on the scale but the 18" feels heavier. Balance is important if you are using it for hunting. Ima2AVoter
is this issue indicative of specific manufacturers? What about accuracy over distance, old way of thought was longer barrel meant truer/flatter trajectory. Would a fluted barrel be worth the extra cost if it gave the desired length? What about crowned barrels versus threaded for flash hider or muzzle brake?
Dane Armory
Longer barrel = more velocity of the projectile. Better accuracy depends on the shooters ablity to stabilize the rifle while pulling the trigger. The muzzle device redirects gases to reduce recoil and quickens your ability to make an accurate follow up shot. My.03@cents.
