And let's not run past the fact that the last wire is wire-nutted approximately a 1/2 inch from the terminal. That alone makes me twitch compulsively because I come across bull$hit like this all of the time.

And don't even get me started about the wire that's been butt-spliced twice.

The white wire is not the ground in houses, green or bare copper is. The white is the neutral( return path aka the identified conductor). In DC voltage the black is usually the ground but in AC voltage the black is hot. Also only the white conductor is the identified conductor even if you put lables on all the other colour wires 

Once you get your head wrapped around that and that branch circuits can be more colours that a LGBQTLDT???? poster as long as the colour white or green( in AC) is nota hot life is good.

 In the fall after a few drinks @DNP and I will teach you about ground wire vs bonding wire  and why even electricians( sadely) get it wrong

Negative. We hired a professional. I know better. I may have done a few little things…wire pulls and really basic stuff. I had someone else hooking most things up.

House wiring compared to 12 volt is messed up.  I always tell people who know nothing about wiring that 12 volt DC runs in a circle and has positive and negative(red/black, black is a negative color).  In vehicles negative is connected to ground/the frame. 

AC house wiring doesn't run in a circle, it sloshes back and forth(basically) through the black and white wires. 

I'de much rather deal with 12 volt stuff.

What was really fun was the wiring I put into my little camper that @Sisco has seen.  All the outlets are duplex.  AC to the top plug, 12 volt to the bottom.  DO NOT plug a 12 volt light into the AC plug!  Child cafety caps installed in whatever plug is not being used.
